My First Maternity Shoot

I was disappointed with last Saturday's weather as the sky was a blanket of gray with the occasional drizzle. I had hoped for nice golden afternoon light while I captured my cousin's maternity photos. Improvisation was needed so we set up shop in front of a window in my house that gives off the most light in any weather.

A piece of white foamcore was used to bounce the light back on my subjects' faces and clothing. The overall idea was to keep the images soft and simple. While a mother is expecting, as difficult as it may be sometimes, it's important to convey the idea of relaxation and serenity so I asked the parents-to-be to make poses that felt natural and turned my focus to details where it was warranted. The future mommy looked lovely and the future daddy made very genuine faces that truly delivered the idea of fatherly love.

The props were a combination of brought items and something that I had on hand. It enabled me to get more of a variety of compositions and gave the photos a little more sentimentality too. I'm very thankful that my cousins were willing to be my clients for the afternoon and for being such great models. We had a very nice time and it gave us another way to look forward to meeting the baby.
